Dealing with Governments

Serving as that important ‘link’ between government and business, the REDAs and their partners have considerable experience in dealing with local and senior governments. This includes a wide range of issues ranging from; ‘wading through’ government regulations; accessing government programs; to; effective lobbying with governments on industry issues.

As community based economic development organizations the REDAs play a role in removing obstacles that can impede business development. We have provided extensive research on issues like the need for special attention to rural industry roads; the need to reduce taxes that limit development; and; a variety of smaller issues brought forward by individual businesses.

The REDA organizations are interested in issues that impact business development and will assist industry to address these issues.

Addressing Labour Shortages

An increasing challenge impacting regional businesses is the difficulty finding suitable labour. The REDAs realize that development in the region requires a labour supply and are prepared to assist industry to find labour sources.

The training institutes in the region have programs designed to develop a labour force for the oil and gas business. In addition to existing programs there is interest in partnerships with industry to develop custom training for specialized needs.

The REDA offices can direct you to contacts in the training centres. Or you can click on the link to access the centres directly.

Taxation Issues

REDAs and their partner communities are interested in assuring a fair tax structure in support of the industry in the region. Lobbying efforts are undertaken with senior governments and member communities are open to discussion on tax issues within their jurisdiction.

Some communities have special tax incentives for new business and/or other support that assists new business establishment.

Use the Member links to contact the community of interest or contact your REDA office.

Business Opportunities

New business opportunities are available as a result of the expanded oil and gas development in the region. There is also an under-representation of service businesses in this area when compared to other oil and gas regions.

The REDA partnership has studied this issue and determined that there is opportunity to provide more localized servicing at lower overall operating costs.

There is also less competition for labour in this region and some potential workforce who would work in the industry if they could be located closer to home in the area.

In addition, major changes to the provincial business tax structure in the past couple years have made this Saskatchewan location more desirable.

The REDA organizations are experienced in dealing with evaluation of new business opportunities and are prepared to assist you in the business planning and financing of your new venture.
